Finished Board art

Two things today, first, some info about the finished circuit board art and second, the promised remaining part about the Module design. The part of the module design will be added in the previous post. I clocked in about 75 hours in about 7 days to get the board art finished because due to all kinds of other events related to this project kept delaying it. So I sat down on the 7th of December, started drawing, and gave myself the deadline of finishing it before or on the 14th. It's unbelievable how much work you can get done if you simply ignore everything else in life and I made the deadline, sorta. Over the following weekend I did some final adjusting and finetuning because there were some details I didn't like, but overal I tossed version 1.1 of the board art online to collect some feedback. Last week I did get just that, so I further changed the board to have 8 mil clearance everywhere, fixed some font issues, and other relatively minor things. You can grab version 1.2 right here. Another reason for this push is that it'll take about two weeks before I'll actually get the manufactured circuit board and my university will be closed for almost two weeks during the holidays. So instead of being unable to continue for a month I figured it'd be wise to let these two overlap, and I ordered a couple of circuit boards two days ago. I haven't slept for two days either because I'm a little excited about it, so it'll be an interesting two weeks. In case you wonder about the details:

That's actually very cheap for some prototype circuit boards. I figured that if I were to do this project, I might as well make it look nice, so I ordered them at PCBcart which has the possibility for 'hard gold' PCI fingers, manages the cutouts for me, can do a black finish of the soldermask and actually accepts Eagle files straight away - no worrying about gerber files. Pretty much everybody seems to have a good experience with them so I didn't mind the slightly higher cost. I prefer to have perfectly working boards than a few bucks cheaper, and not being sure if everything is correct. But even with all those features they're still far cheaper than any other shop I asked, so if the boards turn out to be correct other companies will have a hard time convincing me to use their services instead.
A final thing I want to note about the circuit board is that I won't be having any PCI brackets for it. After some searching I matched the holes and distance of the connectors with these but getting just a handful of those with the correct holes punched in them would cost me a small fortune. I might try to produce two or three of them by hand at my university, but if that won't work the prototype will simply have to do without a bracket.

I really like the idea of what you're trying to achieve and I've got something of a question and a suggestion.
Why not use the XC3S500E instead of the XC3S400 since they're very similar?
The XC3S500E is also much easier to get hold of, they've got a hundred or so in stock at digikey.com and it costs a few pennies less than the XC3S400.

The decision was made really early to use a Spartan 3 chip and we figured the S400 was as big as we could go without using any BGA. Only later we spotted the S500E, but we didn't want to go back, delay the project, and change everything for it. They're not pin compatible so it's not as easy as a simple replace. It's on the wish list though under any final changes we might make, but the prototypes won't have it. In that case an 'extreme' version with an XC3S1200E might even be possible.
In a eerily weird coincidence (unless you happen to work for digikey, which would explain things) I received an email a mere 3 seconds (I'm not kidding!) after your message that the FPGAs have been shipped. Hurray!

Ha, just a coincidence as I happen to be buying the XC3S400 from digikey as well and have been looking to replace it with the 500E myself :) Though I'm doing it for a MiniMig side project that I believe someone pointed out to you in another post.
There's a S400 to S500E pin comparison here if it'll be any help to you later on in your project.

There are some weird changes in there. They probably had their reasons I guess. Interestingly enough the 3E has 17 more IO pins in the same package, which could've been really useful. Oh well.
The XC3S400s arrived today, so it's a final push to work out the PCB and then it's on to soldering everything together. :)

Looks like you made some good progress with the routing.
Sorry to be critical all the time, but I really recommend that you think up a backup solution in case the JTAG chain via USB doesn't work. It could be ugly, like cutting apart tracks on the board or soldering together pads using wire, just that you have the possibility if all else fails...

Hi there again! I don't mind criticism, makes me double-check stuff. :)
Reinder (eightdot) and me had a discussion about that before, but we don't really have any options because the JTAG chain is supposed to be a closed loop. If you'd start inserting 0ohm resistors in the chain so we can split signals, you're soon looking at a lot of extra work for something we probably won't even need.
The reason I believe we'll won't be needing them is because the pinout of the FTDI chip is identical to multiple (commercially available) JTAG dongles. So even if I'd support those dongles with a connector, the schematic wouldn't change. I mean this one and this one (see schematic of prototype 2). Which are both compatible with OpenOCD. Thus, pvga will probably be fully compatible from the start as well, although the optional JTAG signals aren't implemented.
I will be checking the full chain again though, just to make absolutely sure. For more info, see section E of the entry 'communication'.

I'm not sure what the point is of a usb2vga adapter, don't expect that to work without any driver support. The PCI-E card is very nice, but not Open Source. Still, if you only want to play around with the FPGA it's a nice start. I thought you wanted DVI? This one is still VGA only.

About external version, what I'm thinking is 2 parts : 1. internal ( pci, cpld,small flash, memory, usb, sdio card, virtual vga for compatibility mod and boot) and 2. external (svga /hdtv + video decoder / stream mpeg, ... ) .
The external can work allone for retro projects ( just connect to monior. only digital will be nice ) or connected to internal part. The internal bord will just make available the vga registers and framebuffer that will be rendered in a window on external card. More like a virtual vga / svga in hardware. The protocol can be differential and transmit only the changes. It will e like PIP ( Picture in Picture )
This way the external card don't need drivers.
on a laptop thw drivers will do the work.
The internal card can be used for other projects like cdrom2iso on flash stick :). This way is possible to boot an iso file from usb stick ( like an external usb cdrom) if the cpld is large.
Maybe RAID USB Stick over one hub will be nice.

about lvds(laptop screen)/dvi(tft monitor)/hdmi(tv)
i have lvds working on a altera fpga and will try to port that to ProjectVga (using the expansion connector and some single-ended to differential convertors) question will be if the fpga can handle the high speed serial...
dvi seams to be similar to lvds(but not compatible) hardware wise... i dont think it hard to include when lvds is already working. hdmi seams also similar hw wise but is VERY different on the protocol level (encryption?)
another nice step would be to add ethernet and a vnc server

There are dozens of development boards out there, but I still don't get what the point is of posting links to them here. There is a whole collection of solutions for what you want, but making a decision is the tricky part. Find something you like, or design something yourself. If you spend enough time any chip is replaceable with something else. If you're curious why project vga is using these particular chips, please have a look at the "Motivation" section of the documentation.
For your other ideas I can really recommend that you send these to the Open Hardware list. That's the ideal location for discussing subjects like this and more people will be able to help you out getting started. You can subscribe here.
